Doctors in Training
Membership
Representation at both State and Federal levels on junior doctor issues:
- In 2012 the big issue for NSW junior doctors is the number of postgraduate training places at prevocational and vocational (specialist) level
- The AMA has been arguing for a number of years that increasing the number of medical school places will be ineffective in addressing Australia’s significant medical workforce shortages unless there is a coordinated and planned increase in clinical training places for medical students and postgraduate training places for medical graduates
- Our members told us in 2011 that new intern places in NSW are not being fully-funded and as a consequence there is significant and increasing pressure on heads of departments to reduce the number of PGY3 and PGY4 positions
- We are currently lobbying the NSW Government to ensure that not only is there no reduction in PGY3 and PGY4 positions but that NSW puts in place a plan to ensure that there are sufficient postgraduate training places, in the right places and specialties, to train the doctors we need to solve NSW’s medical workforce shortages
