The Medical Women’s Society of NSW Dinner
End-of-year Dinner and Speaker Event
On 24th November 2010, MWS NSW hosted a dinner with four fabulous female physician speakers who inspired us as they described their adventures in Medicine. Our fabulous speakers were Philippa Ramsay, Claudia Lee, Sharron Flahive and Anne Bunde-Birouste.
Philippa spoke about how her skills in performing amniocentesis as an obstetrician/gynaecologist were remarkably transferable when she came to perform an amniocentesis on a beautiful pregnant gorilla. Claudia thrilled us with her adventures as the on-location doctor for the reality TV show Survivor. Sharron amazed us with vignettes of the experiences that took her to the position of team doctor for our favourite rugby players. Anne Bunde-Birouste inspired us with the story of how she broke down barriers and persisted in bringing health to disadvantaged kids through the sport of soccer.
We will be holding more dinner/speaker events in 2011, so please join us for the next event! These events are free for MWS members.
The Medical Women's Society of NSW was founded in 1921 to advance the interests of medically qualified women in professional practice. It was active in establishing the Australian Federation of Medical Women and continues to work for medical women in New South Wales. As doctors and doctors-to-be, there’s probably hopes of making a better world in one way or another. Medicine gives its professional members amazing opportunities for diversity in chosen work... from technical to psychological, from urban general practice to working in the field of international crisis.
MWS NSW encompasses this diversity and at meetings and conferences you could be sitting next to a surgeon or a doctor working in Africa. Support and interest in each other's arenas is given. As well as the fun of making connections and sharing experiences, there is discussion on how, as an organisation that has an advisory capacity at the United Nations and which has already contributed hugely on a variety of human rights and environmental issues at UN, we can continue to make an impact.
