AMA (NSW) says kids’ safety near high balconies and windows should be paramount
AMA (NSW) Councillor, A/Prof Brian Owler, says he is disappointed that the safety of children seems to be regarded as less important than how a building looks.
“Parents should be able to take the steps necessary to protect their children from falls from balconies in their home.
“Of course parental supervision is paramount but parents who want to take reasonable steps to ensure their children’s safety should be allowed to do so.
“The case mentioned in today’s Sydney Morning Herald seems to place more value on the appearance of a building than the lives of children,” A/Prof Owler said.
“Every year approximately 50 children fall from a window or balcony and we should be doing everything we can to reduce this figure.
“Injuries sustained in these falls can cause death or permanent damage resulting in lifelong problems.
“The fact is: these falls are preventable and parents should be able to take reasonable steps to stop them from happening,” A/Prof Owler said.
