AMA (NSW) 2011 Priorities Overview
AMA (NSW) today released its 2011 State Election Priorities (PDF) (201 Kb) paper, and called on all state political parties to commit to the paper’s key recommendations.
AMA (NSW) President, Dr Michael Steiner, said the paper outlined a comprehensive policy blueprint for the development of a stronger and more sustainable health system in NSW.
“There is no doubt that our health system is under great stress,” Dr Steiner said.
“AMA (NSW) consulted extensively with doctors around the state to identify the most urgent problems facing healthcare delivery and to identify practical solutions.
“Overwhelmingly, doctors feel constrained by a health system that is cumbersome and unresponsive to the needs of both healthcare providers and patients.
“Too often, responsibility for decision-making is unclear. The system must become more transparent and more focused on the future health needs of the community.”
The priorities identified by AMA NSW are:
- Training our next generation of doctors in order to solve the medical workforce crisis;
- Lifting the burden of centralised bureaucratic control;
- Involving clinicians in decision-making;
- Developing a transparent health infrastructure priority list;
- Improving access to health services;
- Improving rural health;
- Integrating general practice and hospital services;
- Closing the gap - indigenous health;
- Improving public health outcomes through targeted prevention strategies; and
- Improving the health status of people with developmental disabilities.
