Half of Australians are still getting sunburnt despite cancer risk
April 28, 2015AMA (NSW) President welcomes legislation to ban e-cigarette sales to children
May 7, 2015AMA (NSW) President, Dr Saxon Smith, is encouraging people to heed NSW Health’s advice and get vaccinated before they travel.
“NSW Health rightly points out that a good number of cruise ship passengers and crew have been experiencing flu-like symptoms when arriving in Sydney this year.
“People heading out on a cruise should make getting a flu vaccination part of their preparation, in addition to any other vaccines that may be appropriate for their destination.
“People travelling overseas by plane should also see their doctor and check for any vaccinations they may need, well before they depart,” Dr Smith said.
“Everyone who doesn’t have a medical reason not to be vaccinated should be looking into getting a flu vaccine anyway.
“We’re heading into flu season and it promises to be a nasty one this year.
“Even if you’re not leaving on an exciting overseas holiday, you still want to stay healthy.
“The flu is not just a bad cold – it can be a serious illness and the very young and elderly are most at risk of serious complications.
“People forget that bad cases of the flu can lead to things like pneumonia and that can be deadly.
“So, get your vaccinations if you’re travelling or just want to stay healthy this winter,” Dr Smith said.
