July 11, 2019Unfounded fearmongering on abortion puts women and doctors at risk
August 7, 2019AMA (NSW) welcomes the announcement of the introduction of the Reproductive Health Care Reform Bill to decriminalise abortion.
NSW is the last state in Australia to decriminalise abortion and this has placed the women and doctors here under a different and stigmatised legal arrangement to other states.
AMA (NSW) has previously recognised that the retention of abortion in the Crimes Act is not appropriate for doctors or patients.
It’s good to note that AMA (NSW) has been consulted in the proposed bill.
As with all legislation concerning medical care, it is important to get the balance right for both patients and doctors.
We believe the proposed law will ensure access to appropriate care.
The bill, modelled on recent Queensland legislation, reflects the common law entitlements that currently exist, while removing the stigma and legal uncertainty associated with abortion being included in the Crimes Act.
AMA (NSW) encourages the NSW Parliament to pass the bill.
