Independent review into paediatric services across the state is needed
February 21, 2019AMA (NSW) / ASMOF (NSW) Alliance: the state’s doctors-in-training need better support
February 28, 2019AMA (NSW) President, Dr Kean-Seng Lim, is today releasing the organisation’s election priorities document for both the State and Federal elections.
“Our Vision for a Healthier NSW is applicable to both upcoming elections and calls on all parties to work for what is best for the health system in this state.
“Candidates of all stripes like announcing infrastructure, pilot programs, and funding for projects – but not always in the most helpful of ways.
“This can sometimes be ad hoc or done without a great deal of thought on how it may benefit the health system as a whole.
“People are presenting at hospital emergency departments increasingly sick or more gravely injured than ever before.
“While we need to increase the capacity in the system, building more hospitals alone won’t be effective in safeguarding our health system.
“Just as we can’t solve Sydney’s traffic problems purely by building more roads, we can’t solve health problems solely by building more hospitals.”
“We need to work on better integration of primary and hospital care, improve access to healthcare in the community, improve health IT systems, sort out workforce issues and more.
“Our Vision for a Healthier NSW is a long document, we’re making no bones about health being a complicated issue.
“But it’s an important one to get right and we’ll be encouraging politicians to plan more carefully and work with doctors to implement the best solutions to the problems our health system is facing,” Dr Lim said.
