This is what peak efficiency looks like
September 7, 2016AMA (NSW) and RDA (NSW) Presidents: Without staff, upgraded Bega hospital is just a bigger building
September 12, 2016AMA (NSW) President, Prof Brad Frankum, says RUOK Day is an excellent reminder of the importance of looking out for one another when it comes to mental health.
“Healthcare really can begin anywhere and it can be something as simple as checking in with a friend or family member.
“Asking ‘Are you ok?’ is an easy thing to do and it can help someone start a road to recovery.
“At the same time, we need to ensure equity of access to services that can provide help and mental healthcare.
“We know that people who are in the greatest need of these services don’t necessarily have equal access to them,” Prof Frankum said.
“In March, we learned the suicide rate in Australia has reached the highest it’s been in 13 years.
“It’s the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15 to 44 and we know that twice as many men as women die this way.
“In August, we were reminded that the suicide rate of Australian Indigenous men is the highest in the world.
“We all need to do more to prevent suicide and it really can be as simple as asking someone if they’re ok.
“But that’s just the beginning, ensuring that the services people need to help them are available for everyone is extremely important,” Prof Frankum said.
